Your Dog Days

I find you in the peaceful dawn With the dandelions to your nose, Motionless in my lawn Except for the bees around you.

The grass yields to your furry back And drapes over your eyes That glimmer like dew on chapel glass, Staring blankly at the sky.

Perhaps you see vast fields to play Where all the puppies go one day When the dawn breaks and the light shines again On their bright eyes that never dim By Menangtei K. Thangkhiew

Menangtei K. Thangkhiew is a poet from Nongkseh, 3rd Mile, who finds love in expressing emotions through words that may or may not rhyme. His writings reflect sincerity, feeling, and a deep connection to everyday experience

Specks of Dust

I saw constellations, shooting stars and the Milky Way today— They seemed like strangers in the night. Which is funny because I used to dance under their light.

I stood outside with my tapmohkhlieh and a cup of tea. Three dogs and two cats are running around the garden. Happy to be out in the garden at night.

It feels different, seeing the stars like that. It just reminds you of the childlike wonder Of standing out in the garden and wishing upon a shooting star.

Now I stand outside and look at the vastness of the universe. And I hear Charlie Chaplin's monologue: "Life is a beautiful, magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish. The trouble is you won't fight. You've given up. But there's something just as inevitable as death. And that's life. Think of the power of the universe— Turning the Earth, growing the trees. That's the same power within you— If you'll only have the courage and the will to use it."

And I stand amazed by the wonders of creation. Theories upon theories arguing about who and what made the universe. Amazed that my two little eyes can see the beauty that surrounds us.

Dumbfounded at the fact that these little twinkling lights are millions of light-years away. It's unfathomable that we are just a mere speck of dust— With such power within us— In the hugeness and beauty of the universe. By Shailin H. Lyngdoh
